Essential Worker Spotlight: Bill White

At Big Truck Rental, we understand what it takes to keep our industry moving forward. A big part of that growth is due to our essential workers. We want to shine some light on those special people who have continued to push through during COVID-19 and all of the hard times that have come with this new normal.

Our first spotlight is Bill White from Waste Connections of Portland, Oregon. Get to know Bill below!

  • What company do you work for, how long have you been there, and what is your title?

    • I am a rear load, residential driver for Waste Connections of Portland, Oregon (Arrow Sanitary). I have been a garbage man for about 34 years (Yikes!).
  • Tell us a little about yourself.

    • I have a family of four (2 boys-both in college). We live in Gresham Oregon, a suburb of Portland, near the Colombia River Gorge. I have many varied interests: history, travel, and cooking seem to migrate to the top of the list currently. I try to stay abreast of social and political issues, and almost always have an opinion. I also wish I was better at sports gambling!
  • What is a typical workday like for you?

    • My route is long, but scenic, about a 45-minute drive out to the foothills of the cascades – an area called “Estacada”.  I drive the last of the old rear load trucks, which service both residential cans and commercial containers, I stay in good (not great) physical shape. I’m usually back home wondering what’s for dinner by 4, and in bed (comatose) by 7.

  • What is the most rewarding thing about your job?

    • Getting to finish my career with top-notch equipment, working out of a new facility, and under the leadership of the best district manager (Josh Brown). And knowing in some small way, as I predictably do my route, that I am the glue of normalcy and civility to a community of people. That reliability, at the micro-scale, offsets the macro craziness!

From everyone at Big Truck Rental, we wanted to say thank you to Bill White and the entire team at Waste Connections of Portland Oregon. Keep up the good work!
